“Welcome to Detroit, Michigan and to the latest episode of Grave Messages.”

I was sitting on the steps that led up to the rubble once known as the Guillard house. Joey gave me a sheepish smile as he filmed my monologue. Elliot sat behind him pouting since he’d spent the entire time with banshees in a stupor. I winked at my cameraman before I continued.

“Tonight, we bring you footage we shot two days ago inside this very house.” I gestured to the pile behind me. “And believe me when I say it was quite the ride. This house was built by Sir Albert Guillard in 1902. Old money. New power. He expanded his wealth with investments. And he had a family. So far, so boring?”

I smiled as I stepped over to the remains of a sign. I picked it up so that Joey could focus on it.

“Not quite. You see, his daughters allowed us to film them here. You will meet them in a moment. Taylor and Michelle Guillard who married to become Taylor Forester and Michelle Morales. Independent women who, when love failed them, decided to take action into their own hands.”

Joey held up his fingers, counted to three, then gestured for me to continue.

“They became obsessed with spiritualism to the point where they combined Taylor’s love of photography with Michelle’s obsession with the soul. The two women did horrible things and became something else. Something unworldly.”

I went silent and waited for Elliot to join me. When he didn’t, I dropped the sign back into the grass.

“Fear may be able to twist the mind, but loneliness is strong enough to break it. The creatures you will meet tonight fell into a darkness they couldn’t understand. And all that was left?”

I turned back towards the house and tucked my hands in my pockets.

“Each other. They shared memories of a time long forgotten so they created pictures of the dead. The love they held for each other? It was their one last remembrance.”

Joey raised his hand in a fist then counted to five with his fingers before he lowered his hand. I snapped off the microphone before I whirled around on Elliot.

"So are you embarrassed? Or are you just going to start being an asshole to me onscreen as well as off?"

"How am I being an asshole?" Elliot stood and approached me. He stopped when he was inches away from my face. "You made the entire episode about you. About how you 'saved' us. And you expect me to be happy about that?"

"What did you want me to do? Let you become banshee food?"

Before Elliot could respond, my phone started to ring. I pulled it out of my back pocket, chiding myself for not putting it on silence before the camera started rolling. I saw my mother's number on the screen and groaned.

"I have to take this."

I headed back to the car and got in the backseat before I answered. I didn't want to risk Elliot leaving me behind. Given the mood he was in, that was definitely a possibility.
